Use LiteFaire to help you calculate your savings and simple payback in replacing incandescent light bulbs with high-efficiency bulbs in your home. You can choose to enter data for the house as a whole or enter room values individually and receive savings summaries for each room as well as whole-house totals.
Your electric rate – If the rate is unknown, you can choose your state’s average rate from the 2010 state rates table (Source: Energy Information Administration). This value is entered by tapping on Preferences in the Start screen.
The type of existing bulbs and wattages (for example, incandescent bulb, 75 watts)
The number of existing bulbs (default = 2 bulbs) in the room – this will be the same for both existing and new case
The daily number of hours of use (default = 4 hours) – this will be the same for both existing and new case
The type of replacement bulbs – if a variety of new bulbs will be used in the space, create a separate calculation for each type of bulb and name the space in an obvious manner (for example, a master bedroom conversion of incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs can be named MBr-Inc2CFL, and a master bedroom conversion of incandescent bulbs to LED bulbs for task reading can be named MBr-Inc2LED).
Results LiteFaire uses average costs for bulbs based on the most prevalent prices found in nationally recognized home centers such as Lowe’s, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, etc. The results are presented for the Annual Energy Savings in kWh, Cost Savings in $ (or currency) and Simple Payback in years for the whole house at the top of the results screen followed by each room’s summary. View each room calculation in 3 different levels of detail, simple, mid or high detail by setting the mode in Preferences.
Assumption Halogens are not listed explicitly in LiteFaire since they are rated identically to incandescent bulbs as far as energy use.It is assumed that the majority of bulb replacements will be from incandescent or halogen bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs or LED bulbs.
Replacement Bulb Ratings and Costs
The chart below lists the types of high efficiency bulbs that LiteFaire offers as choices for replacement. Next to each bulb type is the corresponding power the bulb provides along with the equivalent power of incandescent bulb it can replace. The last column shows the average cost of the bulb in dollars. Note that costs can vary significantly from region to region or on the web. These costs do not represent sale prices. It is possible and advisable to obtain bulbs when home centers offer sales.
